Disaster Preparedness

Every Hurricane season, June 1st to November 30th of each year, Sanibel Island is faced with the possibility of a land falling Hurricane. August 13, 2004 Sanibel Island experienced the first Hurricane to strike Lee County in 44 years - Hurricane Charley.  Fortunately the Fire District is prepared in the event of a major disaster with training that is ongoing with the following agencies:

City of Sanibel (Police, Public Works, Utilities and Building Departments)

Captiva Fire Control District

Lee County Emergency Management

Island Water Association

U.S. Fish & Wildlife “Ding” Darling Refugee

Lee County Electric Cooperative

The agencies work under a Unified Command System involving the Fire Chiefs of Sanibel & Captiva, the Sanibel Police Chief and the City Manager.
